POSITION PAPERS

Position Paper Guide

  • Top Bun (Introduction) - A brief introduction to the country and its history regarding the topic and/or UN body

  • Contents - The country’s background on the topic including:

    • Lettuce: The country’s actions on a national level, including political and/or foreign policy

    • Tomato: The country’s actions on the international level, including resolutions, conventions and declarations that the country supports;

    • Patty - Quotes taken from speeches made by heads of the government and/or government representatives.

  • W Bacon - Statistics regarding the issue

  • Bottom Bun (Conclusion): The country’s recommendation for a resolution for the topic.

 

Review the importance of ordering things logically (e.g., the hamburger shouldn’t be on the top of the top bun!). Make sure to cite your sources correctly. Position papers should not be longer than two pages (this does not include works cited). Font should be 12 point and Times New Roman, single-spaced. Paragraphs should be indented, on the next line. Please use the following format on the top left hand side of the paper:

Assess the quality of your position paper. How well did you format it? To what extent did you use critical analysis and evaluate the benefits of your position’s policies? A good position paper will include:  

  • A brief introduction to your country and its history concerning the topic and committee;  

  • How the issue affects your country;  

  • Your country’s policies with respect to the issue and your country’s justification for these policies;  

  • Quotes from your country’s leaders about the issue;  

  • Statistics to back up your country’s position on the issue;  Actions taken by your government with regard to the issue;  

  • Conventions and resolutions that your country has signed or ratified;  UN actions that your country supported or opposed;  

  • What your country believes should be done to address the issue;  

  • What your country would like to accomplish in the committee’s resolution; and  

  • How the positions of other countries affect your country’s position.

 

Submit all position papers as a .pdf or .docx file to the email maryam.naseer@wa-students.org if the delegate is in the Cabinets of India or Pakistan, and to kristina.hoffman@wa-students.org for the Cabinets of the United States and Venezuela. Clearly state in the email your school, position, and committee. File name should be in the format: {Position_Committee}. Please email maryam.naseer@wa-students.org if you have any additional questions or concerns. All position papers must be submitted by 11:59, November 4, 2019.
